Timothy Lawrence Doherty (born September 29th 1950) is a American Roman Catholic bishop. Doherty was the priest in the Diocese of Rockford until his appointment as the bishop of Lafayette in Indiana by Pope Benedict XVI on May 12 in 2010. On the 15th of July, 2010, Doherty was consecrated, becoming the sixth bishop of the diocese.

The year 1999 was the first time Doherty worked as the administrator of parochial services for St. James Church in Lee. He was the pastor at St. Mary Church in Byron between 1999 and 2007. In 2007, he became the pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Church in Dundee as well as St. Mary Mission Church in Gilberts.

After returning in Illinois, Doherty taught religious studies at Boylan Catholic High School in Rockford from 1982 until 1986. He was the director of the school and assistant principal of the department of religion for Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock from 1986 until 1991. After completing his doctoral study in Loyola University Chicago, he earned an Doctor of Philosophy degree in Christian Ethics in 1995. In the is the same year that he also was named the diocesan ethicist responsible for health issues, a position remains in his position. From 1996 to 1999 he served as an associate pastor at the OSF St. Anthony College of Nursing, Rockford, offering courses in theology and ethics in health care.

Timothy Doherty was born in Rockford, Illinois, the oldest of seven children of Lawrence Doherty and June Doherty. He was a student at St. Mary Minor Seminary in Crystal Lake from 1964 to 1968. Then, he went to St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, where the college awarded him the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1972. He was trained for the priesthood at Rome through the Pontifical North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University, receiving the Master of Sacred Theology degree in 1975. Doherty obtained a doctorate degree in Christian ethics from the Chicago’s Loyola University in 1995.

On June 26th June 26, 1976 Doherty received the ordination of a priest in the Diocese of Rockford by Bishop Arthur J. O’Neill. His first post was an assistant priest at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Rockford and he was there during five consecutive years. Then he continued in his study studies with the Pontifical Lateran University, where the doctor earned the Licentiate of Sacred Theology in moral theology from the Alfonsian academy in 1982.

On May 12, 2010, Doherty was appointed the sixth Bishop of Lafayette in Indiana by Pope Benedict XVI. He succeeded Bishop William Leo Higi, who reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 in August 2008. He received his episcopal consecration from Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein on July 15, 2010. He has served as chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People.
