Mary Wayte is one of the most popular and richest Swimmer who was born on March 25, 1965 in Mercer Island, Washington, United States. Mary Wayte Bradburne (nee Mary Alice Wayte on the 25th of March 1965) is an American former competitive swimmer who was a twice Olympic gold medalist and TV sports commentator. In her swimming career in the world, Wayte won eight medals in major international competitions and four gold medals.
The following year the year after, the year Seoul, South Korea hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics she competed in the freestyle portion of winning the gold medal U.S. team in the women’s 4×100 meter medley relay along with team members Beth Barr (backstroke), Tracey McFarlane (breaststroke) as well as Janel Jorgensen (butterfly). It was a tense race for the U.S. women’s medley relay team was plagued by dramatic last-minute events, when several previously chosen swimmers were forced to withdraw to concentrate on their individual races, or were replaced due to their performance falling short of the expectations, just hours before the event’s final. In the final event of the competition it was revealed that the U.S. medley relay team consisted of women who had no experience of team competition with relay exchanges, had no training and no coach. they were also a target for the East German favorites taunted the Americans prior to the race. Wayte would later refer to this race as being one of her most proud moments. She also won the bronze medal in the 3rd-place U.S. women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay team which comprised Mitzi Kremer Dara Torres, and Laura Walker. In her own competition, she placed fourth in the 200-meter freestyle for women; it was also an medalist for the 200-meter women’s single Medley, but was disqualified after the judges decided she had used an illegal butterfly kick during the breaststroke portion in the individual medley.
Wayte married business executive Jim Bradburne in 1995, and they have two daughters, Grace and Audrey Bradburne. She currently lives in Seattle, Washington, and works in corporate communications. Wayte participates in Swim Across America, a charitable organization that enlists former Olympic swimmers to raise funds for cancer research.
Wayte was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1998, the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2000, and the Pacific Northwest Swimming Hall of Fame in 2004. The community swimming pool where she formerly trained in Mercer Island, Washington was renamed “Mary Wayte Pool.”
In 1984’s Summer Olympics at Los Angeles, Wayte won her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s freestyle 200-meter event after defeating her American opponent and former world record holder Cynthia Woodhead. The winning time for the 200 meters in 1:59.23 was her best performance in her career to date, beating Woodhead’s lead early during the last 50 metres. She won another Olympic gold medal after swimming in the preliminaries of the heat for her successful U.S. women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay team.

From 1981 until 1988 Wayte was part of the U.S. national swim team participating in major international competitions in Japan (1981 1985), France (1982) and France (1982), the Netherlands (1982), Venezuela (1983), Monaco (1985), Spain (1986) and South Korea (1988). In 1983, at the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, she won the gold medal as an athlete on the team that won U.S. 4-x100-meter relay. She also won the silver medal at the 200-meter freestyle competition.
Wayte took up an athletic scholarship that allowed her to attend an athletic scholarship at University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where she competed for the Coach Randy Reese’s Florida Gators swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 1983 until 1987. In her time as an Gator athlete, she earned the individual NCAA national championships at the 100-yard freestyle event and the 400-yard individual medley competition in 1985. Alongside Gator teammates Laureeen Welting, Kathy Treible, Tracy Caulkins, Dara Torres and Paige Zemina, she was part of the Gators’ NCAA championship relay teams for the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays during three seasons (1984 1985, 1984, and 1986) as anchors for 5 of six relays. In all, she took home eight NCAA championships during the three seasons. In addition, she won 11 individuals Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships and was on 10 SEC team that won championships in relays. Wayte earned the SEC’s Swimmer of the Year in 1985. She was also awarded 26 All- American awards during the span of her time as an collegiate swimmer.
Wayte graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications in 1989. She retired from competition swimming following the 1988 Olympics, and worked as a fund-raiser for the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She became a celebrity promoter and endorsed products and services on behalf of Alamo Rent a Car, the National Spa and Pool Institute, and Speedo. She later worked as a television broadcaster for the Sports Channel network, covering NCAA and international swimming competitions and interviewing fans at NBA games. For the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Wayte worked as NBC’s women’s swimming color commentator, and later covered the NCAA women’s swimming championships for ESPN. She also served on the U.S. Olympic Committee’s athletes advisory council.
