Kowal was art director of Shimmer Magazine and in 2010 was appointed art director of Weird Tales. She was Secretary of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America for two years. Mary Robinette Harrison was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, she attended William G. Enloe High School and later attended East Carolina University. She earned an education from Art Education with a minor in theater.
