She went to Bweranyangi Primary School as well as Bweranyangi Girls’ Senior Secondary School for her primary and middle schooling, in this order. In 1972 at the age 18, she was admitted to Trinity College Nabbingo to carry the course of her high school education. The year 1974 was the first time she enrolled in Makerere University, graduating in 1977 with the degree bachelor of Arts in Literature (BA.Lit). In the year 1981 she received the title that is Master of Arts in Literature (MA.Lit) and also at Makerere University. The year 1982 was when she was awarded an additional degree, the Diploma in Education (Dip.Ed) from the same institution.
Before her career in politics Okurut is perhaps most famous for her contribution to Ugandan literature, both as a poet and the creator of the Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE) The organization has since attracted international attention and has so far resulted in only one recipient of the Caine Prize, Arach Monica de Nyeko. Her story “Jambula Tree” won in 2007.
In 2004, Mary Karooro Okurut contested for the Bushenyi District Women’s Constituency on the National Resistance Movement political party ticket. She won and has represented that constituency in the Parliament of Uganda until today. She served as Minister of Information and National Guidance from May 2011 until May 2013, when she was reassigned to her current docket. In a cabinet reshuffle on 1 March 2015, she was appointed Security Minister. As of April 2020, karoro okurut is the minister for general duties in the office of the prime minister

Mary Busingye Karooro Okurut (born 8 December 1954) often referred to in the media as Mary Karooro Okurut, is a Ugandan teacher, author, and politician. She is currently the Cabinet Minister in charge for general Duties in the office of the Premier Minister within the Ugandan Cabinet. The Cabinet Minister was appointed the post on June 6, 2016. Prior to that beginning on 1 March 2015 until June 6th, 2016, she was the cabinet minister to National Security. Her appointment to the post on March 1st, 2015 and was replaced by Wilson Muruli Mukasa, who was appointed Minister of Gender and Social Issues. Between 2012 and 2015, she worked as Secretary for Gender and Social Issues in the Cabinet of Uganda. Her appointment to this post in 2012. She was appointed to replace Syda Bumba who resigned from Cabinet. Mary Karoro Okurut is also serving as the elected Parliamentary Member for the Bushenyi District Women’s Constituency.
Mary Karooro Ogunrut began her lectureship at Makerere at the Department of Literature in 1981 after she finished her Master’s degree. She continued her position as Lecturer until 1993. She became the press secretary of vice- presidents of Uganda from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 1999,, she was the Commissioner of the Education Service Commission in the Ugandan Ministry of Education. From 1999 to 2004, she was the press secretary for president of Uganda. In 2004, she was elected to Ugandan politics.
Mary K. Okurut was married to Hon. Stanislaus Okurut until his death on the morning of 5 April 2014; together they had eight children – five boys and three girls. She is of the Protestant faith.
