The woman was released after news reports that her alleged trafficker had surrendered to police, which led Philippines president Benigno Aquino III to make an appeal for clemency on assumption that her testimony would prove invaluable when prosecution of her suspected recruiter. Maria Kristina, the alleged victim of Veloso’s trafficking, Sergio and Sergio’s live-in girlfriend Julius Lacanilao and an African citizen, who is tentatively named “Ike”, will face charges of human trafficking, unlawful recruitment and Estafa (fraud). Her mother believes that Veloso was spared due to an’miracle’. The eight prisoners who were scheduled for execution along with the alleged trafficker were shot by a a firing squads in the early morning of April 29.
According to The Jakarta Post, on 12 September 2016, Indonesia President Joko Widodo reported that Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte had authorized Veloso’s execution. However, on the same day, a Manila Bulletin article said that Manny Piñol, the Philippines Agriculture Secretary, said that Duterte actually asked for clemency for Veloso.
On 16 June 2017, the Veloso family filed a motion for reconsideration through the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, asking the Court of Appeals to rescind the order preventing the prosecutor from deposing Veloso at the Yogyakarta prison. The family’s argument for the motion was that Veloso may run out of time and be executed before she could testify. The motion stated, “No damage can be irreparable as what Mary Jane stands to suffer — to be muzzled before she is silenced forever, to die without ever being heard.”
The petition to get her released by Change.org was the most popular petition from the Philippines ever and attracted over 250,000 people signing it from more than the 125 nations. On April 27, 2015, in the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur members of the ASEAN Youth Forum met with Widodo in an effort to save her life.
