Marvin Fredrick Bateman (born April 5 1950) is an former American football punter who played in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills. He played in the NCAA football tournament on the University of Utah.
On the 30th of October 1974, his name was dismissed due to his poor performance. He was substituted with Duane Carrell.
In 1980, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals and was released on August 26.
In 1987, he was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was inducted into the University of Utah Crimson Club Hall of Fame.
On the 13th of November 1974 on the 13th of November 1974, the Buffalo Bills signed him as an independent player to take over Spike Jones. He was the top player in the NFL for two years in a row with the number of yards net per punt. The year 1976 was the first time he recorded an 78-yard kick that remains the longest kick in team history. The team released him on 21 August in 1978.

Bateman was picked for the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (78th overall) of the 1972 NFL Draft and became the starting quarterback following the team’s trade of Pro Bowl punter Ron Widby to the Green Bay Packers along with cornerback Ike Thomas in exchange for the 1973 second round draft selection (#46-Golden Richards).
He was a star in 1973 when he increased the average of his punts up to 41.6 yards of punting. He was unable to play in one game due to having a collision with one of the Washington Redskins. He was the reserve placekicker and scored an extra point on his sole attempt.
In 1979, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers but retired before the start of the season.
