Martina Schettina was born in 1961 in the district of Wahring within Vienna. Her dad was mathematician. She grew up living in Leopoldstadt, a Viennese District of Leopoldstadt in which she was a student at the primary school “Parzmanitengasse” and the grammar school “Bundesrealgymnasium Vereinsgasse”, where she was able to pass her school’s leaving exam with distinction in 1979. From 1979 to 1983 Schettina took physics and math classes on the University of Vienna and was an artist-in-training. In 1989, she opened her own atelier in Langenzersdorf close to Vienna and, since 1992, has held exhibitions throughout Europe, USA and Asia.

Schettina ended her teaching career in 2007 after having completed her studies. She lives and works in Langenzersdorf, Lower Austria, and is also employed in Vienna.

She attended in the Summer Art school Geras with several famous Austrian artists. They included in 1993 Ulrich Gansert, 1994 Peter Sengl, and 1994 Peter Sengl and Hubert Aratym. She also completed her studies at in the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Between 2007 and 2008,, she collaborated with Chinese artist Xiaolan Huangpu. Schettina taught from 1984 to 2007 at the high education school, in Vienna. Since 2008, her artworks have been regularly published in the daily newspaper Kronen Zeitung on Sundays. Sometimes, her work is published within the daily newspaper Kleine Zeitung.

Since 1992, her works have been exhibited in Austrian and international art exhibitions. Her first solo exhibition outside Austria occurred in 1999 in Mots & Tableaux-Gallery in Brussels. Her work in sculpture and painting has been featured in numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums in Europe, USA and Asia and also at art fairs, such as Art Expo New York City, Art Vilnius, CIGE (China international gallery exhibition) in Beijing as well as at Art Shanghai.

Because her bodies seem to be transparent, Schettina is called the painter with the glassy hand. Her work is influenced by Pop-Art. Her painting “Orange Dress”, which shows a self- confident, modern woman, was shown on the poster of the 2009 exhibition “City. Country. Woman.” in Museum of the City Krems, Austria. From 2008, Schettina has dealt with mathematical themes, which she transforms to paintings. In December 2009 the book Mathemagische Bilder containing paintings and essays was published in Vienna. Schettina also shows performances about mathematics, which are illustrated by her paintings.
