In July 2008, he took over his presidency as The “Liberal group” in the Glarus Landrat. On the 28th of August 2008, along with about 100 other people, he co- founded the conservative Democratic Party (CDP) of Glarus Canton and was chosen as its president, a post was held until April 2012. Then, in October of 2008, he took part in the formation for the National BDP and got elected into its National Council under the BDP banner on February 8, 2009, in the by- election that resulted from his resignation Werner Marti. After his election the BDP was able to meet the criteria to be considered an parliamentary group. From spring 2009, it was formed as its own group within the Federal Assembly. Landolt was elected as National Councillor on 2 March 2009. He was a member of the Committee for Finance (CdF-N) until December 2011. When he was elected as a member of the National Council in the 2011 elections, he joined the Committee for Political Institutions (CIP-N) as well as The Committee for Transport and Telecommunications (CTT-N).

Landolt was elected as the office of Landrat [de in the Canton of Glarus in 1998, as an official of the Swiss People’s Party (SVP). From 2003 until 2008, he served as Vice President of the Glarus branch of the SVP. He was the President of the Landrat from 2006 to 2007. On May 19th, 2008, the Landrat made public his decision to resign as vice-president , and his resignation from the party. He claimed that the party’s values no longer reflect his liberal ideals, and he found an issue with the party’s manner of conducting business and accusing it of unfairness issue in its internal debates. The reason for his departure was in connection with the SVP’s decision to expel its Grisons branch following its refusal to remove federal councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.

Landolt made a notable social policy step in June 2014, when he announced the BDP’s support for same-sex marriage and LGBT adoption, simultaneously denouncing the SVP for homophobia. This announcement made the BDP the first Swiss right-of-center party to make completely equal rights for members of the LGBT community official party policy.
