Eiszner Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Physics and Professor of Biophysics and Computational Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There, He is the principal researcher in the Gruebele Group.The James R. Eiszner Endowed Chair was held previously by Peter Guy Wolynes.

Gruebele has a wife, Nancy Makri, who is also a professor of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They have two kids, Alexander as well as Valerie. He is a passionate participant in running, cycling and triathlon.
