Marques Tavita Tuiasosopo (born March 22nd 1979) is a American professional football player and coach. He was a professional player in the National Football League (NFL) for eight seasons with the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets. Tuiasosopo was picked at the end of the first round in 2001’s NFL Draft by the Raiders with the 59th pick. The following year, he was a part of his former school The University of Washington, serving as the quarterbacks’ coach as well as interim head coach for the 2012 Fight Hunger Bowl. Tuiasosopo serves as the current tight-ends coach at the University of California, Berkeley. He was previously the passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach at UCLA.

Tuiasosopo was picked as the quarterback of the Raiders in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft, the 59th overall selection and the fourth quarterback picked (behind Michael Vick, Drew Brees as well as Quincy Carter).

In 1997 Tuiasosopo was ranked second in the depth chart as quarterback. In the third week of the season when he was summoned to the field for a nationally broadcast in a home match against Nebraska because of an injury to the starting quarterback Brock Huard. Even though the game ended 27, Tuiasosopo performed admirably against the 6th-ranked (and the eventual winner) Cornhuskers, throwing for 227 yards with two scores. In the following year, against Oregon He became the Huskies the their first freshman true to play the game as quarterback throwing for 261 yards and running for 95 yards in a loss of 31-28. He also played a significant role in the following season for the often injured Huard who was not redshirted. In the second half of his sophomore year that year, Rick Neuheisel replaced Lambright as head coach and selected Tuiasosopo as the team’s quarterback to replace the retiring Huard. In the fall of 1999 Tuiasosopo was the first player in NCAA college football to throw more than 300 yards and run more than 200 yards during a game that ended in a 35-30 win against the Stanford Cardinal at Husky Stadium. In 1999, he helped lead the Huskies to an unbeaten conference record of 6-2 and finished second against the Cardinal and getting the team a ticket into be a part of the Holiday Bowl.

In Long Beach, California, Tuiasosopo’s family was from Woodinville which is a suburb to the north of Seattle. A great athlete, he was an outstanding shortstop for baseball at Woodinville High School. After finishing his junior year Tuiasosopo received a call in the 28th selection of the 1997 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins however, he chose to go to college instead. While he was a part of both defense and offense during his high school years (option safety and quarterback) He was most often selected to Division I football programs to play defensive.

In the NFL, Tuiasosopo was primarily a reserve quarterback, the Raiders’ backup to Rich Gannon and Kerry Collins. He was on the sidelines for Super Bowl XXXVII at the conclusion of the 2002 season, but did not appear in the game as his team lost 48-21. His first significant playing time came during a Monday Night Football game during the 2003 season, throwing for 224 yards, all in the second half. Marques played well enough to earn his first career NFL start the following week, but struggled, throwing for just 65 yards along with an interception before leaving the game with an injury late in the first half. He did not start another game until late in the 2005 season, where he again struggled losing 26-10. He was promptly demoted back to the sidelines the next week. The team finished just 4-12 in the 2005 season with primarily Collins as the starting quarterback, paving the way for the younger Tuiasosopo to receive more consideration for the job.
