Marla Lee Runyan (married name Lonergan born on January 4 1969) is an American track and field athlete as well as a road runner and marathon runner , who legally blind. She has been three times a national champion in the women’s 5000m.

In 2001, she had won the first time in three straight 5000 meters National Championships. She also published an autobiography entitled “No Finish Line: My Life As I See It” In 2002, she introduced the roads 5K in addition to the road 5K and 10K National Championships, and she got married to her coach Matt Lonergan.

She won the road 5K again in 2003 and qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games by finishing second in the United States Olympic Trials (track and field). She took 2005 off to give birth to her first child, Anna Lee on September 1, but returned to the roads in 2006 winning her second National Championship at 20 km (her first was in 2003). She was the USATF “Runner of the Year” in 2002 and 2006.

As of April 2014, Runyan holds IPC World Records in the T13 classification for the 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m, 5000 m, High Jump, Long Jump and Pentathlon. Her accomplishments as a world-class runner disabled events started in 1999 at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in which she took home Gold for the 1,500-meter event and was 2nd on the list in the United States in that event in 1999 by Track and Field News. In 2000 she was 8th in the 1500-meter race race at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and became Runyan the first blind person to legally participate at the Olympics and the best score of an American female in the event.

Runyan is a native of Santa Maria, California. After graduation from Camarillo High School in 1987 She went on to pursue her studies in San Diego State University, where she started participating in a variety of sports events including the heptathlon; 200-meter dash high jump shot throw, 100-meter hurdles long jump javelin throw, and the 800-meter race. In 1994, she was awarded her Master’s Degree in education of Deafblind Children.

Runyan was awarded four gold medals during the 1992 Summer Paralympics in the long jump, as well as in the 200, 100 and 400 meters races. She also participated in cycling during those events. She tried to be eligible for an “Able Bodied” Olympics at the 1996 U. S. Olympic Trials she placed at 10th place in the Heptathlon. Although she was not able to qualify, she completed the 800m in 2:04.60 which was a heptathlon-800m American record. The success prompted her to take up distance running. In 1996, at the Paralympics in Atlanta she was awarded silver in the shot-put and silver in pentathlon.

She finished as the top American at the 2002 New York Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 10 seconds to post the second-fastest debut time ever by an American woman.
