Marla was born in her parents’ South Side of Chicago, the daughter of Dell Glen (American-Jamaican) and Cortez Glen (Mexican-American). Glen’s dad was a blues musician and her mother was sang gospel while her mother had been a friend with blues guitarist B.B. King. She was the mother. Dell earned her degree from University of Chicago and went to become a banker with a great reputation who worked with Merrill Lynch. Glen’s father was an American soldier who enlisted in the military at an early age was an engineer who settled at Frankfurt, Germany. As with many other kids in Chicago’s historical Bronzeville neighborhood (also called”the Black Metropolis) who received gifts and inspiration from celebrities including Muddy Waters or BB King. Marla had a musical instrument in her early years and her talent for music began to be evident. She was just 11 years old when she composed her first track, “Repertoire”, a track that has been awarded three gold records and one platinum and is featured on her album from 1996, Love and Respect.

Since 1998, she has lived in Heilbronn in Germany. On July 2, 2004, she entered a civil union with Sabrina Conley at the local Rathaus. In the meantime, they got divorced.
