Markus Antonius Rogan (born 4 May 1982 in Vienna) is a retired Austrian swimmer who earned two silver medals in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and a gold medal in the 200m backstroke in the World Short Course Championships in Manchester. Rogan was also an official world champion for 200 meters backstroke (short course) during that time.
Interview with BBC Sport at the 2008 European Championships in Eindoven, The Netherlands, in March 2008, Markus told reporters that he would take a break from competitive swimming following his participation in the Beijing Olympics on August. Markus was the winner of both the 200 and 100 metre Backstroke races (long course) during the European Championships.
At the 2010 European championships he grabbed silver in the 200 m IM behind Olympic Silver medalist László Cseh.
Markus competed in his last Olympic games in London in 2012. He is now a psychologist working with athletes. He was the director of performance psychology for the Brazilian Olympic Team in Rio de Janeiro, 2016.
As a teen at 6 feet 5 inches, the in tall Rogan competed at Mount Vernon High School (Alexandria, Virginia) in Fairfax County, Virginia, where training was provided by the Curl-Burke Swim Club. In July 2000 the swimmer cut short the final season of the Northern Virginia Swim League, participating for the Mansion House Piranhas (of Mount Vernon) and traveled to Australia to compete at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was unable to get past the backstroke heats. He was awarded a scholarship go to Stanford University from 2000-2004. On the 8th of December, 2005 at Trieste, Markus set a new record for the world for the 200m backstroke race in short course pools, by clocking 1:50.43. The record was later overtaken with American athlete Ryan Lochte, who lowered the record to 1:49.05 during the World Short Course Championships in Shanghai, China. In the short track at Manchester in 2008 Rogan set the record on April 13, 2008, setting a new record at 1:47.84 and Lochte coming in the second place by just seven-one-hundredths one second (also below the old time record). Both swimmers were sporting the brand new Speedo LZR Racer swimsuit.

Rogan’s debut international triumph was his second-place finish in the 200-meter backstroke in the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.
In the 2004 Olympics in 2004 Rogan placed second in both the men’s 100 m backstroke as well as the 200 m backstroke for men with both times falling in front of Aaron Peirsol of the United States. The 200-meter race was controversial because Peirsol was initially disqualified, but was later reinstated as a gold medallist. Rogan said to Piersol on TV that the result was unfair and Piersol should not be able to protest.
In the meantime, Rogan changed his plans on retirement. He swam at the World Championships 2009 in Rome. As he was training in Italy, the event was virtually on home ground and he wanted to enjoy the home event with his Italian training partners.
