Villar was a candidate for a third term in the 2016 elections, and was successful. A special election is scheduled to take place to succeed Villar who was appointed to in the cabinet of president Rodrigo Duterte on August 1 in 2016. In the meantime, pending the special election that will occur within Las Pinas to fill in Villar’s position at the bottom of the House House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has designated his wife, Emmeline Aglipay Villar, as the interim representative.

Mark Aguilar Villar (born August 14 1978) is an Filipino politician and businessman who is currently serving as secretary of Public Works and Highways of the Philippines. His parents are the former Senate President and president campaigner Manny Villar and incumbent Senator Cynthia Villar. He was the Representative for Las Pinas of the Philippine House of Representatives and previously held executive positions within the real estate business of his family. A part of the Nacionalista Party, Villar was named to the presidency by president Rodrigo Duterte to join his Cabinet on May 17th, 2016 and took office following the resignation of Congress on August 1st, 2016 to replace Rafael Yabut.

Villar became the first public official elected in the year 2010 as a congressman from the only district in Las Pinas, succeeding his mother, Cynthia Villar, a three-term senator who was elected to the Senate. In his time he was Chairman of the House Committee on Trade and Industry as well being Vice Chair of the House Committees on Overseas Workers Affairs, Labor and Employment, and Science and Technology.
