Mark Serwotka Biography

Mark Serwotka is one of the most popular and richest Trade Unionist who was born on April 26, 1963 in Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom. Mark Serwotka (/’ S e@r v O U t K @ / ; born on 26th April, 1963) is the General Secretary to the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) the largest trade union for British civil employees. He is also the President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

In the 2000 general election for Secretary, he had to contend with two opponents: Hugh Lanning of the Membership First faction and the incumbent Barry Reamsbottom of the National Moderate Group. But Reamsbottom didn’t get the 50 branch nominations required to be listed on the ballot. Serwotka was then able to defeat Lanning with 41,000 versus 33,000 votes. After the election of Serwotka, Reamsbottom refused to step out of office after his term was up in protest of what he said were irregularities that violated the law in the process of voting. The case was brought by the High Court where Serwotka won and later was elected to office.

In September 2010, he was named as among the hundred most influential British Catholics.

In 2013, he was fitted with a battery-powered ventricular assist device. In December 2016, he had a heart transplant.

In the General Secretary election of 2000, Serwotka pledged that if elected, he would accept the equivalent of a typical civil servant’s pay. Serwotka will pay approximately the equivalent of PS8,000 from his pay to his union.
