McLean received an honors degree with distinction from The University of Toronto with an undergraduate degree in performance jazz. He was in his 3rd year when, faculty participant Don Thompson invited him to perform on the debut of more than 70 albums that McLean performs. McLean received the honor of being recognized as “Post-secondary Musician of the Year” by Jazz Report Magazine in 1998. In the summer of 1998, McLean was a teacher at the Canadian Interprovincial Music Camp (jazz). He was also music director for Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute as he was completing his undergraduate degree.

McLean relocated from the city of his birth to New York City in 1999 after receiving an award from the Canada Council for the Arts. At first, McLean wanted to study with his idol, the world-renowned drummer Brian Blade. Though he was not a teacher, Blade mentored McLean by giving him the opportunity to observe his performances. He also helped him shop for a drum set and the chance came up the two of them walked into Drummer’s World at 46th street in Manhattan and got to meet the jazz drummer, archivist, and radio personality Kenny Washington. Blade advised McLean “this is who you should study with.” McLean took classes in the studio of Kenny Washington for a year before completing a year of study with Drummer Billy Kilson. Following that, McLean was able to decide to stay on to pursue possibilities with New York. Piano and singer Andy Bey was the first to contact, followed by Dewey Redman.
