Maley began his career with Sunderland and was able to progress through the youth academy at Sunderland. Maley was loaned out to lower league clubs Blackpool, Northampton Town and York City, making a number of appearances in the Football League. His career came to an end when he was accidentally getting hit directly in the eye of Sunderland teammates John Oster with an air gun in 2002.

Maley is from Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear and began his football career with Sunderland after having progressed through their youth system. He made his first-team debut as a the right back position in the League Cup first round second leg match with York City on 18 August 1998. Sunderland took by a score of 2-1. It was his sole appearance during his 1998-1999 campaign. He returned to this tournament the following season, starring in a 3-2 win over Walsall after which he was substituted by Michael Gray on 80 minutes. His third, and last appearance with Sunderland was in a 3-0 win against Luton Town in a second round League Cup tie on 19 September 2000. Just an entire month after that after, he was loaned by Third Division team Blackpool for one month. His first appearance was in a draw of 2-2 with Southend United in a Football League match on October 8 and was also a part in a 2-0 loss to Plymouth Argyle. He was later transferred on loan to join Northampton Town for a month and played two times, playing in defeats against Walsall as well as Swindon Town.
He was signed by York City on an initial month-long loan on the 27th of September 2001. The loan was arranged as in a deal between both clubs including Sunderland sending some players to York. The player made debut just two days later in the left-back position in a 3-1 win over Lincoln City. This loan extension was granted to another month in November, and he hinted that he might have been keen to join the club on a permanent basis. He was given the premier red of his life during an 2-0 loss against Scunthorpe United. He sustained an injury to his knee during the FA Cup tie against Colchester United on November 17, that led to him taking the late fitness test prior to their match with Swansea City, and was fit enough to take part, and was able to enter the game as substitute. It was then extended to another month on the 22nd of November. The loan was extended to the conclusion of the 2001-02 season on the 18th of December, however he had to go back to Sunderland in March 2002 , after being injured in the thigh. He concluded his time at Sunderland with 17 appearances across every competition.
