Mark Richard Grieb (born May 23rd 1974) is an former Arena football player who played most of his time playing for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League (AFL). Grieb is currently an assistant coach for the Sacred Heart Prep Gators football team located in Atherton, California. He was a 13-year member of the AFL playing as a quarterback with the Anaheim Piranhas (1997) and San Jose SaberCats (1999-2008, 2011-2012). The player also appeared in NFL Europe for the Scottish Claymores (1998) and also in the XFL with the Las Vegas Outlaws (2001). Grieb is the only quarterback from AFL time to pass more than 47,000 yards and more than 300 touchdowns, more than 3,800 passes completed, and more than 10,000 passes. Grieb officially retired the 8th of November the 8th of November, 2012. He played football in the NCAA Division at the University of California, Davis. Grieb played for 48,080 yards in his time in the Arena League, XFL and NFL Europe.
On April 3 in 2013, Grieb was appointed head coach of football for Menlo College. In February of 2015, Menlo dropped its football program. On April 26, 2017, Grieb was named the head coach of Atherton’s Sacred Heart Preparatory.
At the end of 1997, Grieb was signed as a player with in 1997, the Anaheim Piranhas of the Arena Football League. The following season, Grieb was traded to the Milwaukee Mustangs, and spent 1998 with the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe before returning to Arena football with the San Jose SaberCats for the 1999 season, and continued to play for the remainder in his professional career. As a member of the SaberCats they have played in four ArenaBowls with wins in the years 2002 three years, 2004, and 2007, however, in 2002, while on his journey to completing his AFL records-setting regular season of 13-1 year, he suffered an injury during a game against the Arizona Rattlers, sustaining a fractured collarbone that ended his season. John Dutton, Grieb’s backup at the time, assumed the role and helped guide the team to the ArenaBowl which they won against the Rattlers. In 2004 Grieb was able to remain well and helped guide his team the SaberCats to another win in the ArenaBowl with the Rattlers. The following year, Grieb assisted bring the SaberCats to a second ArenaBowl appearance, this time in ArenaBowl XXII, a 59-56 defeat against Philadelphia Soul. Philadelphia Soul. After the 2008 season , the league was shut down for 2009 and Grieb was an unsigned free agent. In 2011, as the SaberCats began to return the team signed Grieb back into the team to play in his eleventh year. Grieb continued to play throughout the 2012 season before declaring his retirement on the 8th of November on the 8th of November, 2012.
