After his education in Trenton State College, he was a math teacher for Lacey Township High School in Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey and later left for a position as a referee full time. When he was at Lacey Township High School Geiger received one of 103 winners from the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching in 2010.
Geiger was officiating at the Geiger was the official officiator at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia. Geiger officiated in the Group E game between eventual champions of the tournament Brazil as well as Austria in the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez in Barranquilla. Geiger’s first assignment was the second group stage match of Group B between Portugal and Morocco. Geiger worked as the VAR In the match between Denmark and Australia. During the match he advised the referee, Antonio Mateu Lahoz, to review a possible handball in the penalty area. After review, Lahoz awarded a penalty kick that allowed the Socceroos to score and secure a 1–1 draw. He subsequently worked as VAR for the Group D match between Argentina and Iceland, the Group G match featuring Belgium and Tunisia and the Round of 16 contest between Uruguay and Portugal before his final assignment in the tournament’s Third Place match.
Geiger was chosen for the role of Major League Soccer referee of the year in the 2011 season, and again in 2014.

Mark William Geiger (born August 25 1974) is an American sports administrator, and a ex-soccer referee. He is the chief director of match officials for the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) that oversees the domestic referees within Major League Soccer (MLS). Geiger was previously a referee in MLS and was included on the FIFA International Referees List from 2008 until 2019. On the international stage, Geiger refereed the 2012 Olympics and 2013, and the
- CONCACAF Gold Cups; and at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups. In the 2014 World Cup, he became the first official from the United States to officiate a knockout game at the World Cup tournament. Prior to becoming an official referee full time Geiger was the high school mathematics teacher.
Geiger began his career as a referee in 1988 when he began refereeing. He was the United States Soccer Federation National Referee in 2003, and was officiating for Major League Soccer from 2004 until the year 2018. He officiated at CONCACAF events since becoming an FIFA referee back in 2008 and has officiated at the Gold Cup and other international events and fixtures. Geiger was selected to referee to referee the CONCACAF U-20 Championship in 2011 and was the referee in the final.
In 2012, Geiger was selected as one of 16 referees to officiate at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Geiger took charge of the Group D match between Spain vs. Japan and the quarterfinal between Japan vs. Egypt. In 2013, Geiger was an official at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
