Mark James Burchill (born 18 August 1980) is an Scottish former professional footballer and coach. The player played with Scottish club Celtic, Dundee, Hearts, Dunfermline Athletic, Kilmarnock and Livingston and within England as a player for Birmingham City, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United. He was selected six times by Scotland. Scotland National team.
On June 11, the 11th of June, 2008 Burchill was signed on a 2 year contract in the club of Rotherham United, where he had previously played on loan during the club’s Championship campaign. Burchill scored his first goal in The Millers at the end of the 1-1 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge. But, Burchill left after the 2008-09 season. Kilmarnock coach Jim Jefferies had tried to take on Burchill in 2008, but the player decided for Rotherham. In July 2009, Burchill was a part of in the Scottish Premier League team in Italy to train for the preseason, was said as “looking very sharp”, and signed a one year contract at the end of August. He suffered an Achilles tendon injury during a friendly game against Burnley and eventually required surgery. He began training again in mid-October. His first strike in the team’s 1-1 draw against Hibernian on the 12th of December, 2009.
On 25 March 2013, Burchill was named as a player/assistant manager of his home town club Livingston with Richie Burke to become the manager. However, Burchill was not eligible to play during the end of season 2012–13 due to international clearance not being received on time. He made his competitive debut for Livingston on 27 July 2013 in a Scottish Challenge Cup match against Berwick Rangers.
Burchill was appointed caretaker manager of Livingston in December 2014. As manager he led the club to success in the 2014-15 Scottish Challenge Cup and also saved the side’s Scottish Championship status on the final day. Midway through the following season, Burchill was sacked with the club sitting second bottom in the Championship.
On the 28th of January, 2005 Burchill got the chance to depart Portsmouth with a no-cost transfer after two years of favor. He decided to go back to Scotland and join Hearts and stayed until the close to the football season. The 6th of July in 2005 he signed with Dunfermline Athletic where he scored 12 league goals over 31 games during his debut season despite the club languishing in the lower reaches of the list. He signed a one-year extension on his agreement as a player for the Pars in December of 2006. On April 8, 2008 Dunfermline Manager Jim McIntyre declared that Burchill was being given a contract extension, however, he had decided to quit his position with the Scottish First Division side in order to “pursue other avenues”.

Burchill was born in Broxburn and was raised living in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. He was a student at St Mary’s Academy, Bathgate which was followed by St. Margaret’s Academy, Livingston and it was there that his footballing abilities became evident. Burchill started his career with Scottish club Celtic during the 1997-98 campaign. In the first three seasons at the club , he had scored twenty Scottish Premier League goals in just 17 games, and made 33 appearances in substitute roles. The prolific form of his return helped him make it into the Scotland national team of football when he made his first appearance against Bosnia-Herzegovina on October 29, 1999. When playing in the match for Celtic in a match against Jeunesse Esch of Luxembourg in the preliminary round of the 2001 UEFA Cup, Burchill scored the fastest hat-trick ever scored in an European club game. However, subsequent managers failed to consider Burchill as a Scotland international as a member of the first-team picture. After the signing of PS6 million Chris Sutton further pushed Burchill lower in the pecking order and in September of 2000, he made the move into Birmingham City on a three-month loan. He made his debut with a 2-0 victory at home against Tranmere Rovers. Burchill was able to score five goals in just 17 games (10 as in replacement) during the period. Birmingham would like to finalize the loan, but they they were unable to reach personal conditions with Burchill. When the deal was signed in January 2001 Burchill made the decision to stay for a loan of three months until the season’s conclusion in Ipswich Town, scoring once against Bradford City.
In the off-season, Burchill was hired in the off-season by Portsmouth for a fee of PS600,000. He immediately showed his potential when he joined his new club. After his debut game with Stockport County he scored twice in his subsequent game in a match against Grimsby Town. But the knee injury he sustained in less than one month kept him out for a period of 10 months. He was able to recover and was able to kick off the 2002-03 season in top form, however under the their new coach Harry Redknapp he fell down the pecking order, and was offered a transfer. However, he did make to 18 appearances and scored four goals when they won the First Division Championship and promotion to the Premier League. He was loaned by Dundee beginning in the month of February until the conclusion of the season. He helped them to their first Scottish Cup Final, in which they were beaten narrowly by Rangers. The 2003-04 season saw him was loaned out at first Wigan Athletic, and then Sheffield Wednesday. But he was unable to score for either team and neither club moved to make the loan permanent. In the 2004-05 season, as a the fifth choice striker Burchill was on loan with Rotherham United, hoping to perform enough to bring back his career. However, after only one month, and just one score at Crewe Alexandra, he was injured and then returned to Portsmouth in the midst of being dropped further back in the pecking order because of the fitness improvement of Vincent Pericard.
Burchill became a free agent after his contract with Kilmarnock expired. On 1 September 2010 Burchill, having received several offers to move abroad, agreed to sign for Cypriot First Division side Enosis Neon Paralimni.
