Marita Payne is one of the most popular and richest Sprinter who was born on October 7, 1960 in Barbados, Canada. Marita Payne-Wiggins (born on the 7th of October 60th, 1960) is a Canadian former track and field athlete who participated at two successive Summer Olympics. She is the Canadian record holder for the 400-metre race alongside Jillian Richardson. She also had the Canadian record for the 200 meters.

Payne received silver in the 200-metre event in 1983’s Universiade and also assisted Canada get silver medals in four x 100 as well as 4 400 meters relays. The same year, she received a silver medal for the 400 meters relay during the Pan American Games. She also competed in the inaugural World Championships two weeks earlier. In the World Championships, which took place in Helsinki she placed fifth in the 400m which was the highest performance of an athlete from outside Europe in the discipline. She broke the current Commonwealth record by the speed of 50.06. She also joined forces with her Canadian colleagues in the 4 100 as well as 4×400 meters relay events, in which they were fourth and fifth in the finals, respectively.

Payne helped the Canadian 4 × 400 metres relay team win a gold medal, and finished fourth in the individual 400 metres race, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games. In 1987, she won her second silver medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay at the Pan American Games. A few weeks later, she reached the semi-finals of the 400 metres at the World Championships, and along with Crooks, Killingbeck and Richardson, she took Canada to the fourth position in the 4 × 400 metres relay. The team reunited for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, but failed to finish in the relay final. She was a semi-finalist in the individual 400 metres race. Shortly after the Olympics, she retired from track and field.

Payne was inducted into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1991. Ten years later, she was inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame.

In the year 1980, Payne enrolled at Florida State University (FSU), where she played for FSU’s Seminoles in track and field, before graduating in 1984. She was a multi-time NCAA All-American, she was the national champion in 400 meters between 1982 and 1984. She was also four-x 100 meters relay champion national during 1981, 1983 and 1984 and the indoor 4-x200 m relay champion in 1981, and a 4 400 metres relay champion national between 1983 as well as 1984. Payne also had a relationship with her spouse Mitchell Wiggins at FSU, as he played on the Seminoles basketball team.

Payne was born in Barbados and was raised within Christ Church, Barbados. When she was a child Payne’s parents Ina as well as Clarence Payne moved in New York City for school and work, but she remained in Barbados. When she was nine, Payne was nine years old, she returned home to her parents. the family moved to Toronto, Ontario, and then in Concord, Ontario. She was a student at the Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute in Toronto and grew into a superstar sprinter, winning Ontario national champion at the senior 100 meters and 200 meters in 1979.

At the 1984 Summer Olympics, held in Los Angeles, Payne won a silver medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay with her teammates Charmaine Crooks, Jillian Richardson and Molly Killingbeck. She also competed with her teammates Angela Bailey, Angella Taylor-Issajenko and France Gareau in the 4 × 100 metres relay, in which the team also won a silver medal. She finished fourth in the individual 400 metres, establishing a new Canadian record (49.91).
