The father of her, Richard was an three-time All American volleyball player at the University of California, Los Angeles and was the captain of the team in winning three consecutive national championships. Irvin was coach by Chuck Adams, and formerly by the 1980 Australian Open champion Brian Teacher. She became a professional player in 2000 and had already achieved the WTA ranking of the top 80 players in the world while still an amateur. The year she made it in the Top 100 by she qualified to play in the Australian Open (while still a student at Stanford) and beating Corina Morariu in her first round, only to lose to eventual champion Lindsay Davenport in the second round. Also, she had a solid performance in the ITF Women’s Circuit winning her first professional event in Florida. She achieved her highest ranking at the end of the year, No. 64. She also played in the first WTA semi-final (upsetting Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the process) in her participation in the Big Island Championships. She achieved her highest ranking of No. 51 in August of the next year, and she beat Justine Henin in the Bank of the West Classic for her greatest career victory. Her best performances during her final years on the Tour included the third round of the French Open in 2003, 2005 and 2004, the 4th round at the (then) Sony-Erricson Championships in Key Biscayne, FL in 2002 (l. the eventual Champion Serena Williams) and the fourth round of the Pacific Life Open in 2004.
