Baena is a native of Pereira, Colombia. She began playing golf at six. She was at an institution called the University of Arizona in the United States and had an excellent amateur career. The highlights of which included winning the single NCAA title in 1996 , and being runner-up in the U.S. Women’s Amateur 1996. She was awarded the Honda Award (now the Honda Sports Award) as the top female golfer in the country.
She was selected in her first appearance on the LPGA Tour at her first attempt, and she played her first season in 1999. However, she hasn’t completely fulfilled the expectations of her amateur years. Her highest result in a stroke-play event at the Tour is tied with second place in the Jamie Farr Kroger Classic in 2003. In July 2005, she was the unexpected winner of the inaugural HSBC women’s world match play championship defeating South Korea’s Meena Lee one-hole in the championship final. She was awarded $500,000, three years of exemption from the LPGA Tour, and a gold horseshoe necklace.
