He was one of the co-founders and co-founder of the Democratic Party, being a candidate for leadership of the party on the 18th of July, 2007. He received 5906 votes in his candidacy, and was admitted in his own capacity the constitutative assembly of the party. They was elected to the commission that drafted their statute. He also was a member of the national direction of PD.

He was a candidate of the PD at the legislative elections of 13–14 April 2008, in Lazio circunscrition, at number 18, but wasn’t elected. He was candidate to the national secretary of the PD on 25 June 2009. He became a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies on 13 June 2012, replacing Pietro Tidei, which he was until 14 March 2013.

He was the founder and is the director of the newspaper La Croce, on 21 October 2014, available online and also briefly in a purchasable edition from 13 January to 16 May 2015.

Adinolfi began as Adinolfi was a Christian Democracy member, but following the dissolution of the party Adinolfi joined the newly formed left-center Italian People’s Party, being the youngest member of their constituency assembly in 1993, at 22 . He was elected the national head of the Popular Youth of the party in 1994. In the following year, he joined the executive national for the PPI. He was the founder of his own movement called Direct Democracy to run for the mayorship of Rome during the municipal elections that took place on May 13th, 2001. He was a supporter of Walter Veltroni in the second round of elections.
