Marilyn Fay Neufville (born 16 November 1952) is a former sprinter who competed between 1967 until 1971. Neufville beat the world record for the 400m race and was awarded four gold medals as well as a bronze medal at various regional championships. Born in Jamaica her family moved to Jamaica at 8 years of age in Great Britain.
In the summer of 1970, prior to that year’s British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh Marilyn decided to be the representative of her birth country, Jamaica over her country of residence. This was a source of great controversy with a large portion from the British public believing that she was a liar in the country her country of origin and believed her decision to switch was an act of treason. In the Commonwealth Games Neufville established a new record for the world by surpassing the previous record previously set by Frenchwomen Colette Besson as well as Nicole Duclos with 51.0 (electronically recorded at 51.02) when she was 17. The record was her first and thus far the one and only Jamaican woman to set a new outdoor world record. In 1970 she earned recognition in the ISTAF athletics competition in Berlin as well as during the AAA championships, where she ran 52.6 ahead of Germany’s Christel Frese and Inge Eckhoff. In 1971, at the Indoor AAA championships Marilyn lost to Jannette Champion who changed the results of earlier in the year. The following year, at the Pan-American Championships in Cali, she took home her third gold medal as well as bronze in the 4x 400 meters. In the 2001 Central American and Caribbean Championships she took home the 4th gold. Her accomplishments brought the two Jamaica Sportswoman of the year awards in the year 1970 and 1971. She was awarded the award in 1972. began her studies as a student at her first school, the University of California, Berkeley. Her rank is 3 on the school’s list of all-time players. After fighting with injuries Marilyn returned to the sport at in 1974 for the British Commonwealth Games but was not her usual self, only placing sixth in the 400m final. At the 1976 Summer Olympics Neufville made her Olympic debut, finishing 4th in the heat. However, she had to withdraw from Round 2 of her heat due to injuries.

Marilyn was awarded 3 Women’s AAA championships when she was juniors in the 100-yard and 150 yards in the category of under 15s in 1967. She also won the 220 yards in the under 17 age group in the year 1968. She also placed second in the AAA Women’s Championships, behind Dorothy Hyman in the 200 meters, in which she ran 24.3 seconds. Marilyn first made her debut on the world stage in September of 1969 when she contested the 4×400 meters in the Great Britain vs West Germany match in Hamburg. In March of 1970 she took part for Great Britain in the European Indoor Athletics Championships and took home the gold in the 400-meter race in 53.01 she broke her outdoor record of 54.2 and also the world indoor record in addition to her own UK National Junior Indoor Record which was in place until February 2019 after Amber Anning ran 53.00 dead. In 1970, she was awarded her first WAAA outdoor title in the same distance with 52.6.
