She she grew up in Brooklyn. Her mother worked in a factory and her father worked as an elevator operator at the postal office in Brooklyn. Nance was a student at New York University (1971-1972) where she studied journalism. She then went on to receiving an undergraduate of Fine Arts degree in graphic design and communication at Pratt Institute (1972-1976) and the Masters of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art, (1996) as well being a graduate of ITP NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (1998). She was the first person in her family to attend Art School.
She has been a finalist two times of the W. Eugene Smith Award in Humanistic Photography (1991 and 1993) for her work that focuses on African American spirituality. She received three New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships, each for photography (1989 and 1999) as well as nonfiction literary (1993).
In 1995, Nance became a digital pioneer, developing her soulsista.com website, and in 1996 serving as one of the first internet DJs. In 1997, she developed a digital project prototyping Ifa divination, and in 1999 she curated a digital project for the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, putting online more than 500 images of nineteenth-century African Americans. Nance went on to become a Technology Specialist in the New York City public school system, helping teachers and their students use technology as a tool for lifelong learning.
In 2017, Nance attended ITP Camp, a 4-week crash course/playground where makers, artists, musicians, creatives of all sorts come to make work, hear speakers on the cutting edge, and collaborate with people from diverse disciplines.
The year 1977 was the first time she was selected as official photographer of The North American Zone of FESTAC 77 Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture The festival was an annual Panafrican international festival which was held within Lagos, Nigeria. The festival ran from January 15th through February 12th, 1977, and was focused on the themeof “Revival, resurgence, propagation, and protection of black and African cultural values and civilization.” In the course of the whole month long event, she collected 1500 images, which represent the largest photographic archive of this important occasion.

Marilyn Nance (born November 12 1953) is often referred to as Soulsista is an artist of African descent who is interested in exploring the human connection, spirituality as well as the role of technology to tell stories. Her work has been featured on Life, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Essence, and New York Newsday.
Nance began to take photographs when she was a kid, but decided to declare herself a photographer after she worked in the the Pratt Institute’s Office of Public Relations under the supervision by Alan Newman. After the studio shut down around 1974, Nance started working as a freelancer as a photographer for The Village Voice. Her work was concentrated upon African American Spiritual Culture. She created images of groups like The Black Indians of New Orleans, Oyotunji African Village in Sheldon South Carolina, churches in Brooklyn and one of the very first Black Christian church to be built in America.
Nance served as an artist-in-residence at the Studio Museum in New York City from 1993 to 1994. She gave a lecture on her work to the Library of Congress in 2004.
