Marieke Wijsman is one of the most popular and richest Speed Skater who was born on May 9, 1975 in Leusden, Netherlands. Anne Marie Louise (Marieke) Wijsman (born 9 May 1975) is a Dutch former speed skater who represented her country at two Winter Olympics, and who was the first female speed skater to compete in international competitions using clap skating.
On January 1, 2001, she was crowned the winner of a World Cup race in the B-Group. This time it was a 10,000m run in Helsinki. The following month, she suffered an accident that was extremely hard and resulted in an injury to her skull. Although she was able to recover but she was not picked in any one of the Kernploeg teams. She was a part of Marianne’s pro team for quite a time however, as the team didn’t last for very long, she soon found herself left on her own. But, during that time she also won a Race in the World Cup B-Group 500m at Heerenveen and also won a Bronze medal during the Dutch National Sprint Championships, placed 11th at the World Sprint Championships, and was selected to compete in at the 2002 Winter Olympics, her second Olympics that took place at Salt Lake City. In Salt Lake City, she placed 19th, both for the 500m and 1000m. After in 2002’s Olympics and with the assistance of Tjalling van den Bosch, Van den Bosch able to be sponsored to create an own team of professional athletes. In 2002, during the summer, she was a part of the team together with Peter Mueller again, but when Van den Bosch became a fitness coach for the American national speed skating team, she relocated together with Van den Bosch in Salt Lake City to prepare for the 2004 season as well as in 2006, the Winter Olympics. The results of this training saw Wijsman winning silver at the 2003 Dutch Sprint Championships. In 2003, at the World Sprint Championships she only placed 23rd. At the 2003 World Single Distance Championships she placed 11th for the 500m race and thirteenth at the 1,000m.
In late December 2006, Marieke Wijsman ended her international career as a speed skater in order to devote herself to working as a police officer.
Wijsman’s last notable result was a B-Group World Cup win over 500m in Heerenveen, which took place on 11 November 2006.
Wijsman’s early successes resulted in her being made a member of the national team in the early days, which was led by an Eddy Verheijen. She was eligible to compete in World Cup meetings in South Korea and Japan and was the very first woman skater who competed in international competitions on Clap skates. The international victory was won on the 11th of January during the city of Milwaukee in the 1000 meters in the B-Group. In 1997 she was elevated again to the Kernploeg that is the most well-known team run by the KNSB which was at the time led by Peter Mueller.

Wijsman is a native of Leusden near Utrecht, Netherlands, and was a part of the community speed-skating club that was based in Ankeveen in the season 1988-1989. She began competing at the age 13 on the Jaap Edenbaan in Amsterdam in which she lost her balance in the 500m race due to nerves. In the next 500m race, she recovered and completed the race in 1:07.1 She also skated in her first ever competitive 1000m race on the same weekend, and finished with the time of 2:44.0. In her first race as part of a team she ran 53.10 during the 500m, and 2:53.80 during the 1500m. The following years, she made steady progress with her performance as her ability to train improved.
When she was in 1992 Wijsman was a participant in a Dutch National Championship for the very first time in the Supersprint Championships in Groningen, where she placed 17th position. The year 1994 was the time she placed 8th at the Dutch national junior all-round championships and was able to be a part of the district team for the region. On December 15, 1995 as a member of this team, she competed in her first race internationally in Hamar in the city in which the skating component from the 1994 Winter Olympics had been held. In 1996, at the KNSB Dutch Single Distance championships held in Groningen, Wijsman won the title of Dutch national champion in 1500 meters.
Though Wijsman had a good relationship with Van den Bosch, they decided to go separate ways at the end of the 2004-05 season, after Wijsman finished 23rd at the World Sprint Championships. In June 2005 she began to train with the KNSB regional top team again, on which she participated in several World Cup meets and the World Sprint Championships in Heerenveen, where she placed 16th. She won a B-Group race over 1000m in Milwaukee, but was unable to qualify for the 2006 Winter Olympics. In the summer of 2006, she applied for a job with the police and was hired. A contract was signed between the police station and the KNSB making sure that Wijsman was still able to compete in speed skating while learning to become a general police officer. Together with Frouke Oonk, she then joined the team of Chris Witty, who quit her international career after the 2006 Olympics to begin training her own team.
