In 1995’s Australian Open, unseeded Marianne Werdel defeated fifth seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina in the first round of the match. Werdel was able to win four consecutive sets to finish this match with straight sets defeating Sabatini 6-1 4-4. Werdel also beat Sabatini earlier in the year in a tournament held in Japan. After she defeated Sabatini, Werdel continued to make her way through the draw by beating Park Sung-hee Elena Makarova, Barbara Paulus and Angelica Gavaldon en route to an encounter in the semifinals with top seed in the draw and World No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. In their previous two matches, Werdel had lost both times against Sanchez Vicario. This time proved no different as Sanchez Vicario defeated Werdel in two sets. When she reached the semifinals, this year’s Australian Open proved to be the best performance Werdel could have achieved had in Grand Slam singles competition. She beat Sanchez Vicario two months later in the third round of the Lipton Championships in Key Biscayne.
