Mariana Avitia is one of the most popular and richest Archer who was born on September 18, 1993 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The two archers who were eliminated in the semi-final, Avitia faced Khatuna Lorig from The United States in the bronze medal match. With the conditions being difficult, with unstable wind gusts, Avitia overcame the five-time Olympian to claim her first Olympic medal with her bronze medal and Roman’s silver at the end of the competition, securing Mexico’s first archery Olympic medals. The victory of the pair marked it as the very first time, since 1984’s Summer Olympics the two Mexican athletes have shared with each other on the stage in an Olympic sports discipline. It was also also the first time that it was accomplished by Mexican women.
Avitia was awarded five medals at her participation in the 2010. Central American and Caribbean Games as well as her participation in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics shortly afterwards was what made Avitia Mexico’s first athlete of her age to take part for the two Olympic games. She came close to missing winning a medal, but was eliminated by the eventual winner Kwak Ye-ji from South Korea in the semi-finals and falling in the final to Russian’s Tatiana Segina in the bronze medal race.
Following the 2012 Olympics up to the end of 2015, Avitia prioritised her university studies and life outside of sport over competitive archery. Although her overall form was not consistent enough to be chosen to compete at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games or the 2015 Pan American Games, she nevertheless won the Mexican national championship in 2015 with victory over Aída Román in the final. In early 2016 she was unsuccessful in her bid to win selection for the 2016 Summer Olympics at the national team trials.
Avitia was re-selected for the Mexican team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, entering the women’s individual and women’s team events alongside Aída Román and Alejandra Valencia. Scoring 659 points in the 72-arrow ranking round, Avitia earned the tenth seed for the individual competition, and combined with her teammates, the fourth seed for the team event. Her Olympic competition did not begin well with the trio eliminated from the team competition at the quarter-final stage. She however had more success in the individual event, winning her first four matches – including a surprise victory over South Korea’s Lee Sung-jin, the second seed and a gold medalist in the team competition – before losing to Román in the semi-finals.
At the age of 14, Avitia entered 2008 Summer Olympics as the youngest participant in the Mexican Olympic team. She won the first 72-arrow ranking stage of the women’s individual competition with a total score of 641 points, which is five less as teammate Aida Roman. This earned her the 20th spot in the knock-out rounds of the competition. Avitia started her head-to-head match well, winning against Son Hye-Yong from North Korea and Poland’s Malgorzata Cwienczek as well as Georgia’s Khatuna Narimanidze. She won the first three elimination rounds, with the second result being described as a surprise according to The Guardian. After Roman’s loss in the third round against north Korea’s Kwon Un-sil Avitia was able to make it to the quarterfinals as the only Mexican remaining in the women’s contest. In the quarter-finals, she had to face Kwon in the quarter-finals of her match, which was played under rainy conditions, Avitia lost the twelve-arrow contest by 105 to 99.
