She is a Nigerian weightlifter. She is a female weightlifter in the +75kg class, and she has been 4-time African Champion and gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games. She also earned the bronze medal at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships and she has competed in three different seasons at the Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in 2008.

At the Beijing Games Usman competed in the +75 kg division and finished fifth, but was upgraded to a bronze medal after the silver and bronze medalists from that event, Olha Korobka and Mariya Grabovetskaya, were suspended in August 2016 after testing positive for dehydrochlormethyltestosterone. She placed fifth place at the 2009 World Championships in Goyang, South Korea and then took silver overall at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. She improved to finish first during the 2010 Commonwealth as well as the African Championships and took overall bronze at the 2011 World Championships held in Paris, France.

But, Usman won the 2016 African Championships which took place at Yaounde, Cameroon, and was part of Nigeria’s contingent in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In Rio, she placed 8th of 16 athletes in the +75 kg category. Usman claimed that her lack of success was due to inadequate training opportunities provided for her by Nigeria and declared that she would not be a competitor internationally representing her home nation.

Usman was raised in Kaduna, Nigeria and took up weightlifting in order to stop the harassment she experienced from boys. She made her debut internationally in 2007 when she won gold in three of three categories in the division +75 during the 2007 All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria and finished 9th at the World Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She was then able to compete in Olympic participation in the Olympics in 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing, China by winning the +75 kg category during the African Weightlifting Championships in Strand, South Africa.

Usman was selected to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics with her victory in the +75kg division in the African Championships in Nairobi, Kenya however, in London did not finish the Clean and Jerk portion of the competition, and didn’t place. Her performance improved throughout the years that followed winning victory at both the 2013 Commonwealth Championships in Penang, Malaysia as well as the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2015’s 2015 African Games in Brazzaville, Congo, however, she fell to silver and placed 17th at the World Championships in Houston, Texas.
