In her first year, Giannis Ploutarchos offered her a job. However, she declined it as she wanted to focus on her studies. She decided to return to her homeland after 2 years of study at the University of Ioannina. She continued her studies at University of Cyprus. She opened her own tutoring class after she graduated. Her mother applied to Maria Elena in 2011 to audition for Greek Idol, but she did not make it to the auditions.

Kyriakou chose Despina Vandi. Despina crowned her the winner of the battles when she performed “Hero”, against Eva Kanata. She performed “I Have Nothing” in the second live show and was saved from the public. She performed “Den Eisai Edo” in the third live show and was saved once more by the public, along with Stelios Maialios. She performed “Hurt” in the fourth live show and was saved by the audience to advance to the semi-final. She performed “Bleeding Love”, her solo performance, and “Listen,” her duet with Mando in the semi-final. After receiving 60 points from her coach, Kyriakou advanced to the final with 80 points from the public. The day following the semi-final, Kyriakou’s song “Dio Egoismoi”, was made available on iTunes on May 3, 2014. She performed “Dio Egoismoi”, her original song, and a duet of the song “No More Tears” with her coach. She performed “Because of You” as she advanced to round two with Kosmidou, Kintatos and Kintatos. Kyriakou won both the series and a record contract with Minos EMI.
