She became the wife of Miguel Contreras in 2005, who was the executive secretary-treasurer of Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (AFL-CIO). The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor is home to 600,000. It reached its peak under Durazo, the first woman leader. Durazo was able to secure allies for the Los Angeles City Council, county Board of Supervisors, and recently passed a minimum wage law that required large Los Angeles hotels and restaurants to pay workers at $15.37 per hour. This is one of the highest base wages in the country. Durazo was elected as permanent replacement for Martin Ludlow on May 15, 2006. She was reelected on August 4, 2010 as the AFL-CIO’s Executive Secretary-Treasurer.
On August 11, 2008, Durazo was elected to serve as the new chair of the UCLA Labor Center advisory committee. The vote was by acclamation.
On January 15, 2008 Durazo endorsed Barack Obama for president, and took a three-week leave of absence from her job as Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor in order to campaign for Obama. She then became a national co-chair of the Obama for President campaign committee, and was a pledged delegate for Obama at the National Convention in Denver. She served as Vice Chair on the 2008 Democratic National Convention Committee.
She was the Chair of the National AFL-CIO’s Immigration Committee from 2000 to 2004. Durazo was appointed National Director of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride in 2003.

Durazo, like many others who are now part of California’s labor movement, started her career among farmworkers. She grew up in Central Valley picking strawberries, peaches, and grapes as the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Cesar Chavez, the founder of United Farmworkers of America inspired her to fight for equal rights. Durazo graduated from St. Mary’s College, Moraga, California in 1975. After graduating from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California in 1975, Durazo earned a law degree at the Peoples College of Law, Los Angeles. She then became an organizer for International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union.
She joined the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union Local 11 in 1983. Durazo led a reform slate in 1987 against Andrew (Scotty), Allen’s ensconced local leadership. His administration had been resistant to immigrant workers participating in local governance. Durazo seemed to have the upper hand but the international union overturned the election and placed the local in a trusteeship headed by Miguel Contreras. She married Miguel Contreras, a fellow union activist she had met at HERE Local 11. Maria Elena was soon elected to the office of President of Local 11 in May 1989. From 1989 to 2006, she served as the President of Local 11. Durazo was elected the local president with 85% of the vote, becoming the first Latina to lead a major union. Durazo was the president of Local 11 from May 1989 to March 2006. Durazo was the president of Local 11. Durazo was arrested with many other New Otani workers for participating in the sit-in demonstration. Many of them were then dragged away from police officers. In 1996, she was elected to the executive board at HERE International Union and was also elected in 2004 as Executive Vice President at UNITE-HERE International.
Prior to being elected to the State Senate, she was an American trade union official. She served as the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor from May 2006 until December 2014. She currently serves as the Executive Vice President of the governing Executive Council of the national AFL-CIO and as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
