In 2009, her first book, Native Speakers, Ella Deloria and Zora Nealehurston, Jovita Gonzalez, as well as the Poetics of Culture was nominated for the Gloria Anzaldua book award from the National Women’s Studies Association. Chicana Movidas, a edited volume she co-authored with Maylei Blackwell and Dionne Espinoza, covered oral histories of activists of color. Ms. Magazine published a review describing it as “a treasure trove” of Civil Rights Era materials. Cotera said that Chicanas were not well documented in institutional collections, so contributors often had to create their own archives.
Cotera edited her first novel, Life Along the Border. She then went on to get her Ph.D. at Stanford University in Modern Thought & Literature in 2001.
