Gillis was selected by the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, New York City, New York to receive its first MAD Spirit Award for involvement in social causes. She was also awarded the Walter Carsen prize for excellence in the Performing Arts by a panel of her peers from the Canada Council for the Arts.
In May 2011, she received the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award from the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.
On March 3, 2011, Gillis was named a 2011 laureate of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
She was awarded a Career Grant by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec in 2001 for her outstanding contribution to Quebec’s culture.

Gillis started her own company, Margie Gillis Dance Foundation, in 1981 with the goal of supporting and presenting her artistic work. These works have been toured across North and South America, Asia, India, Europe and the Middle East. In 1979, she was the first to bring Western modern dance to China. Gillis leads two week-long dance retreats at HollyHock in the summer months. It is located on Cortes Island, British Columbia.
Gillis has been honored with numerous awards throughout her career. She is an Honorary Cultural Ambassador of both the Canadian (1981), and Quebec (1986). She was the first modern dancer to receive the Order of Canada in 1987.
