During that time, she chaired the Commission on the Future of Higher Education. This commission recommended reforms at the post- secondary levels. She left her post as Secretary of Education to start Margaret Spellings & Company, a Washington, D.C. education consulting firm. She is also a senior advisor for the Boston Consulting Group, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

In September 2005, Spellings announced the formation of the Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education, which has also been referred to as the Spellings Commission. The commission was charged with recommending a national strategy for reforming post-secondary education, with a particular focus on how well colleges and universities were preparing students for the 21st-century workplace. Controversial recommendations included a call for colleges and universities to focus on training students for the workforce and supporting research with commercial applications.

In April 2005, on PBS’s The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, she called Connecticut’s resistance to the No Child Left Behind Act the “soft bigotry of low expectations.” According to the program’s transcript, she said:

In 1979, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science at the University of Houston. She also worked as an associate executive director for Texas Association of School Boards. Spellings served as the political director of Bush’s 1994 gubernatorial election campaign. She later became a senior advisor during Bush’s term as Governor of Texas in 1995-2000.

1972. This was a result of Spellings’ previous declaration that she would enforce HB2. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported on May 31 that Spellings had reversed her position, and stated she would not enforce HB2 in order to prevent a loss of federal funding for North Carolina.

Following Rod Paige’s departure as Secretary of Education, Spellings was nominated to the post of the Secretary of Education by George W. Bush on November 17, 2004, confirmed by the U.S. Senate on January 20, 2005, which also marked the beginning of Bush’s second presidential term, and sworn in on January 31 the same year. She was the second female Secretary of Education.
