Marcus Aaron Robertson, born October 2, 1969, is an American football safety who was also the current defensive backs coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Robertson spent the past 28 seasons in the NFL as both a player and an administrator. He also coached the NFL’s defensive backs for the last 12 years.
Robertson was a college football player at Iowa State. Robertson was a cornerback for Iowa State during his four seasons. He had 257 tackles and six interceptions. In 2009, he was inducted into Iowa State Athletic Hall of Fame.
On February 3, 2014, Robertson was hired by the Raiders as an assistant defensive backs coach to Joe Woods. On January 21, 2015, Robertson was promoted to Defensive backs coach under new head coach Jack Del Rio, during the off-season Robertson earned the endorsement of veteran player Charles Woodson. The Raiders totaled the eighth-most interceptions (30) and the sixth- most passes defensed (163) in the NFL during Robertson’s two seasons leading Oakland’s defensive backs.
On January 16, 2017, Robertson was hired by the Denver Broncos as defensive backs coach after former defensive backs coach Joe Woods was promoted to defensive coordinator.
Robertson started his coaching career in 2007 as an assistant secondary coach with the Tennessee Titans. He was then promoted to head secondary coach in 2009 and 2011. Robertson was able to rank the team second in the NFL for average passing yards per completion (10.1) during this span.

The Houston Oilers drafted Robertson in the fourth round, 1991 NFL Draft. Robertson was twice named NFL All-Pro in 1993 and 1997. He played in 162 regular-season matches (144 starts), and ended his career with 24 interceptions, 72 passes defensed.
Robertson was the Titans’ director for player development for four seasons (2003-06). Robertson and his team won the Winston and Shell Award 2006 for their innovative and committed work in player development in the NFL.
On February 13, 2012, Robertson was announced as the assistant secondary coach for the Detroit Lions. Robertson had previously coached with current Lions head coach Jim Schwartz and current Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham when both were assistants with the Titans. Robertson was not retained by the Lions following the firing of Coach Schwartz and the team’s failure to make the playoffs in 2013.
