Marcos Aurelio Mateo Lora, a Dominican right-handed professional pitcher for the Ishikawa Million Stars in the Baseball Challenge League, was born April 18, 1984. He played for the Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball (MLB), and for the Hanshin Tigers in Nippon Professional Baseball(NPB).

Mateo started the 2010 season with Tennessee and recorded a 2.18 ERA and 1.258 WHIP. He also had 29 strikeouts before being called up to Triple-A Iowa Cubs in July. After pitching eight games in Iowa, Mateo was called up to the Cubs and replaced Mitch Atkins on their 25-man roster. Mateo made his major league debut in the 11th inning. He gave up a sacrifice fly for Pat Burrell, the San Francisco Giants’, which allowed the Giants to score the winning run. Mateo had already given up two hits and one walk to load the bases when Burrell scored the winning run. In 2010, he would pitch in Chicago for 20 more games, posting a 5.82 ERA and a 1.338 WHIP. He also had 26 strikeouts over 21.2 innings.

On December 12, 2013, Mateo was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the fifteenth pick of the Rule 5 draft.

Mateo joined the Cubs’ Class A affiliate in Peoria to begin the 2008 season. Mateo struck out 20 batters over eight innings, prompting him to be called up to the Daytona Cubs High-A affiliate of Chicago. Mateo pitched 25 games for Daytona and had a 3.57 ERA, a 1.31 WHIP and 65 strikeouts. To protect him from being picked in the Rule 5 draft, the Cubs added Mateo to their 40-man roster. MLB.com also considered Mateo a “top prospect”. Mateo was promoted to the Cubs after he did not allow a run in nine innings. Mateo also started the 2009 season with Daytona. According to reports, the Cubs wanted Mateo to be tested as a starter before calling him up from Double-A. Mateo made his debut with the Tennessee Smokies, Cubs’ Double A affiliate. Mateo pitched 3 1/3 innings for the Smokies. He walked four, struck out one and only allowed one run. He would pitch in 34 games for Tennessee and make 13 more starts. His season ended with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP and 70 strikeouts over 97.1 innings.

The Cincinnati Reds signed Mateo as an amateur-free agent in 2004. Mateo was signed by the Reds as an amateur free agent. He joined the Gulf Coast League (GCL), Reds’ Rookie-level minor league affiliate. He pitched 13 games with the GCL Reds and had a 4-3 record, a 4.30 earned run average (ERA), 1.46 WHIP, and a win-loss record of 3-3. He joined the Billings Mustangs in the Pioneer League for the 2006 season.
