Marcos A. Rodriguez is one of the most popular and richest Entrepreneur who was born on July 22, 1958 in Cuba, United States. Rodriguez Sr.’s sons Marcos and Tony Rodriguez became interested in broadcasting. Rodriguez purchased KLTY in Fort Worth, KSSA in Dallas, and KLAT in Houston. KSSA was later sold by Tichenor Media System.
Rodriguez Sr. immigrated to Texas in 1964 with his family when he was offered a job at 1540 AM (then KCUL), a Fort Worth country and western station. Rodriguez Sr. was the one responsible for the station’s attempt to launch an all-Spanish format at 93.9 FM (then known as KBUY), which was the first station in North Texas with this format. Rodriguez Sr. pursued radio broadcasting in Texas. In 1975, Rodriguez Sr. purchased the station for whom he had previously worked. He changed the call letters to KESS (that frequency now known as KLNO), and became the first Hispanic owner in Texas of an all- Spanish radio station.
He launched KOJO, a full-service DFW radio station on 94.1 FM, a frequency previously used by sister station KESS-FM, with Paul Martin, Chuck Gratner, and Mark Elfstrand (Johnson). In 1981, the 94.1 frequency was relaunched with the KLTY call letters. KLTY-FM (94.1) was considered “the nation’s largest and most successful commercial Christian radio station” and through Rodriguez’s leadership, the station began to be considered as “a benchmark for other Christian format radio stations”.
On February 15, 1992, Rodriguez Sr. died of a heart attack at the age of 65. His son, Marcos A. Rodriguez took over his father’s station and pursued additional media ventures. Over a thirteen-year period, Rodriguez owned and programmed many stations in Texas, founding and/or operating the stations KLTY, KESS-FM, KICK, KMRT, KTCY and TV31, under the Dallas radio group during the 1980s and 1990s. In addition to the radio stations, Rodriguez owns a real estate brokerage firm, Aspen Real Estate Company, as well as TV Aspen (Channel 19) in Aspen, Colorado, where he resides with his family.
Rodriguez Sr. became dissatisfied and was allowed to leave Cuba in August 1962 with his family, moving to Miami. His wife Gisela Rodriguez was a qualified pharmacist in Cuba and he held various odd jobs. However, her Cuban credentials were not readily accepted in the United States. About a year later, she was offered a job at a Shreveport pharmacy, Louisiana. The family then moved to Louisiana. Rodriguez Sr. was offered a job in broadcasting as a floorman for KTBS TV, a Shreveport television station. He was promoted to cameraman within a year.
