Jeanette Ottesen, Loughran’s girlfriend, was attacked by a driver in Copenhagen in June 2015. He sustained multiple injuries. He and Jeanette were married in Copenhagen in June 2015 and their daughter Billie Mai was born in December 2017.

Loughran hails from Tolworth in Surrey, England. He was awarded a swimming scholarship at The Southport School, Queensland, Australia, during high school. Marco was known as “offshore boy” while there. After graduating from high school, Marco accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Florida in Gainesville. There, he competed in swimming and diving with Gregg Troy’s Florida Gators team in National Collegiate Athletic Association competition (NCAA) in 2009 and 2010. He was awarded three All-American honors in two American college swimming seasons. He won 4 golds at the SEC clean sweep of the Men’s backstroke class. Marco swam at UF in both years and he was the fastest Men’s 200-yard backstroke in NCAA before the March finals.

He has been in a relationship with Danish swimmer Jeanette Ottesen since 2014. Loughran and Ottesen got engaged in early 2017. In June 2017, they announced that they are expecting their first child. They were married in Copenhagen on July 16, 2017. In December, 2017 Ottesen gave birth to a girl. Loughran’s father hails from Caerleon, Wales whilst his mother is from Venezuela
