Marco Etcheverry is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on September 26, 1970 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia. Marco Antonio Etcheverry Vargas, a former Bolivian footballer, was born 26 September 1970. He played as a forward. He is a creative playmaker and one of the most important Bolivian football players. From 1996 to 2003, Etcheverry was a Major League Soccer player for D.C. United. D.C. United won eight trophies under his leadership. He was also nominated for the MLS Best XI award in four consecutive seasons, 1996-1999.

He was awarded the Bolivian Congress’ “Order of Merit” on April 12, 2006 and the title of “Distinguished Citizen”, shortly after his retirement.

On October 20, 2007, Etcheverry was honored with a tribute match at RFK Stadium, prior to United’s regular-season finale versus Columbus. Etcheverry is the first United player to be so honored. Etcheverry, playing with teammates from the club’s 1997 MLS Cup winning side, defeated Hollywood United (a collection of former players and actors), 2–1, with Etcheverry drawing and scoring the winning penalty in the final minute.

Etcheverry made his debut as football coach in early 2009 after he accepted an offer from second division club Sociedad Deportiva Aucas, but he was sacked after only four months in charge. On 6 October 2009, Etcheverry was announced as the new Oriente Petrolero coach, replacing Pablo Sánchez. But in the middle of the negotiations he decided not to go through.

Etcheverry was twice a winner in 1997 Copa America, as Bolivia reached its final. This was Bolivia’s best performance since 1963. He represented the team at the FIFA Confederations Cup 1999.

Between 1989 and 2003, Etcheverry scored 13 goals and accumulated 71 caps for Bolivia. Four times he scored during qualification for 1994 FIFA World Cup. He also scored an 88th-minute opening goal against Brazil in La Paz. This was the first loss of the Selecao in World Cup qualifying. It helped Bolivia to participate in the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1950. El Diablo was expelled from the tournament for kick Lothar Matthaus just four minutes after he had substituted in the opening match against Germany. Etcheverry was then suspended and La Verde, which finished last in Group C, suffered two losses and a draw against South Korea.

In 1996, Etchverry joined D.C. United Major League Soccer. He led the team to three MLS Cups. He was also named MLS MVP 1998. Etcheverry was with the team for eight years, playing 191 league games. He scored 34 goals and had 101 assists. At the end of 2003, he retired.

On September 23, 2006, Etcheverry was honored at a home game against the New York Red Bulls. During halftime he was put up on the “D.C. United Tradition of Excellence” sign in the stadium. After all of this Etcheverry walked over to the La Barra Brava part of the stadium and did his trademark clap in front of them, he did after every game, win or lose.
