Apicella’s excellent performances in Japan in 1992 and 1993 earned him a ride at the Jordan Formula One team. This was his home race in 1993. Team boss Eddie Jordan wanted to test out new Formula 3000 drivers. After a multi-car collision, he qualified 23rd and was forced to retire at the first corner. Emanuele Napetti was his replacement for the next round in Portugal. He is now falsely believed to have the shortest Formula 1 career of any driver. This record was held by Ernst Loof.

Apicella remained with Dome in Japanese Formula 3000 for 1994. He won at the Mine Suzuka, Fuji circuits and was on his way to the title. Apicella continued to race in Japanese F3000 for 1995-96 (the series was renamed Formula Nippon in 1996), but he chose other motorsport activities, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Apicella moved back to Italy for 1999, competing in the Italian Formula 3000 championship. He scored two wins during the season on his way to third place in the championship. Apicella also tried to qualify for the Spa round of the International Formula 3000 championship in 1999 for Monaco Motorsport, but failed to do so due to adverse weather conditions. Apicella has since gone back to Japan, to compete in touring cars with the All Japan GT Championship.
