F.C. was Almeida’s most stable period. Alverca, which Almeida helped to promote from the Segunda Liga 2002-03, scored a career-best five goals in 32 games. After three seasons, he left for abroad, almost going unnoticed at Ciudad de Murcia, Spanish Segunda Division. He then returned to his homeland, playing one campaign each with F.C. Maia and Portimonense SC.
Almeida signed by Southampton’s manager Dave Jones in July 1999 on a one-year loan. The goal was to make the move permanent. After impressing in preseason friendlies, he made his debut in the team as a 71-minute substitute for Claus Lundekvam, in a Premier League match at the Dell on 19 September 1999. Within eight minutes, he was with fellow substitute Thierry Henry outside of the Southampton area when Tony Adams gave him a pass. Henry was trying to clear the ball when he stumbled. Henry wrapped his foot around it and sent a rocket of goal into the Southampton net. This was Henry’s first goal in English soccer.

Almeida was a Barreiro, Setubal District native and played youth football for Sporting CP. Almeida began his senior career at Casa Pia A.C., and then moved to Sporting Clube Lourinhanense as the latter was the farm team for the Primeira Liga giants. He was loaned again to S.C. Campomaiorense for the 1998-1999 season.
Almeida did make a few appearances in the Saints’ reserves. He also scored in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea on 22 September 1999. However, he was not called back into the main squad. The loan was cancelled in December. He also tried unsuccessfully with Bolton Wanderers in September 2000, and Cardiff City (managed in 2007 by former Southampton boss Jones). In the United Kingdom, Almeida returned to Sporting in 2007, but was released the next summer.
