From June 2018 to February 2020, he was the 12th Secretary of state for the European Union of the Government of Spain.
He accepted the offer of Josep Borrell, the former boss of his and the former EU Parliament President Josep Borrel to succeed Jorge Toledo Albinana in the role of Secretary of State for European Union. Arancha Gonzalez Laya, the new foreign secretary, appointed Juan Gonzalez Bararba Pera as Aguiriano’s replacement.
He assumed the role of Acting Director General for External Policies of the Union in April 2010, and was officially appointed Director-General in July

He began his political career in 2004 as Joan Colom i Naval’s replacement. However, he didn’t stand for election to the European Parliament in May 2004, but instead assumed the position of Deputy Director to the Cabinet of President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell, 2004-2007.
