Vink was born into a football-mad family in Suriname a few months after 1970 FIFA World Cup. He thanks his middle names for the achievements of Brazil’s national football team that year. His name is Carlos Alberto Torres. Marciano, a young player from Suriname, was born in the Netherlands. Marciano studied at TOS Actief and ADE Amsterdam. Vink was a prolific young player and his talents were quickly noticed by Ajax scouts. He was soon admitted to one of the most important sides in European football history.

Vink’s time with Genoa was a disappointment. In a season that saw Genoa barely avoid relegation, he played just 13 matches (2 goals). He decided quickly to return to the Netherlands to play for top Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. Vink was not the player his coaches wanted him to play. PSV Eindhoven was gradually challenging Ajax for dominance of the Eredivisie. However, he was frequently sidelined by injury. His injury-plagued time with PSV ended in 1997 when Luis Figo gave a stern tackle to PSV in the Champions League match FC Barcelona – PSV. He spent the next two years undergoing rehabilitation, but to no avail. His contract was terminated in 1999 and he was not allowed to renew it. His reputation was damaged and he played 48 matches in five seasons. To revive his career, he joined ADO Den Haag’s 1st Division outfit on an amateur basis. He only played five competition matches. Marciano Vink’s career was over after this. Vink displayed his resilience by briefly returning to professional football to prove to critics that he wasn’t unlucky and was a good player. Vink played one more season for the Ajax satellite team Ajax Cape Town. He was a welcome addition to the team as he won the 1992 UEFA Cup. He retired from professional football in 2002 and became a player agent.

Marciano Vink was at the peak of his career when he captained the Netherlands twice in 1991. Rinus Michels, the national team coach, called him up at the age of twenty for the European Championship qualifier matches against Malta and Finland 1992. He was awarded two caps in a month but was not called up again due to injury.
