After his retirement as a player, he was appointed manager of Everton and Colo-Colo in Chile. He joined Platense, the regionalised 3rd Division of Argentine Football in 2010.
He joined Colo-Colo Chile in 1995. In his first year at the club, he was part 3 of the winning teams. He left Colo-Colo in 1995 to join Racing Santander in Spain. Espina retired from Racing in 2004, after 2 seasons.

In 1986, Espina started his career at Platense as a player in the Primera Division Argentina. He moved to Mexico in 1989 and played for Irapuato, then Atlante F.C. He returned to Argentina in 1992 to play for Lanus. However, he only lasted one season and returned to Platense.
