Marcello Giordani is one of the most popular and richest Opera Singer who was born on January 25, 1963 in Augusta, Italy. Giordani was born 25 January 1963 in Augusta, Sicily. His father was a former prison guard and his mother was an ex-prisoner. At an early age, he was a gifted singer and took private lessons in Augusta. He also sang in a church choir. He quit his bank job when he was nineteen. He began his vocal studies in Catania, and then continued in Milan with Nino Carta from 1983 to 1985. Giordani’s professional operatic debut was in 1986 when he played the role of the Duke in Rigoletto in Spoleto at Festival dei Due Mondi. Two years later, he made his debut at La Scala singing Rodolfo’s La boheme. He continued to sing in Europe and Italy, and in 1988 he made his American debut with Portland Opera. This was a company with whom he often appeared in the early stages of his career. He was also engaged with many other American opera companies, including San Francisco Opera (Seattle Opera), Los Angeles Opera (Opera Company of Philadelphia) and Los Angeles Opera (Los Angeles Opera). In 1992, he was first to perform at the Vienna State Opera as Sanger in Der Rosenkavalier. He appeared in 14 roles and 72 performances. Giordani was the Metropolitan Opera’s first performer in 1993, as Nemorino in a Parks production of L’elisir d’amore. He was opposite Maria Spacagna who played Adina. On 11/12/95, Giordani was Rodolfo to HeiKyung Hong’s Mimi. He was conducted by Carlo Rizzi.
Marcello Giordani Foundation was established in 2010 by Giordani to support young opera singers as they begin their careers. In Sicily, the first Marcello Giordani Vocal Competition took place in 2011.
Vocal problems that had been developing in previous years began to become more severe in 1994. While he began to train his voice in New York with Bill Schuman, he did not cancel any of his engagements. He sang Alfredo in La traviata in Covent Garden in 1995 under Sir Georg Solti. His career was reconstructed thanks to his mentorship. Giordani sang again at Covent Garden in 1997 under Solti (as Gabriele Adorno, Simon Boccanegra), in the last opera performances Solti would ever conduct. His Met career, which was initially sporadic at best, started to blossom. In 27 roles, he sang in over 240 performances for the company. This included the lead tenor role in the Met premieres of Il pirata and Benvenuto Cellini. He sang in the Met’s season opening performances in 2006 (Pinkerton, Madama Butterfly) as well as 2007 (Edgardo, Lucia di Lammermoor). On 18 September 2008, he was also the tenor soloist at the Met’s performance Verdi’s Requiem in Memory of Luciano Pavarotti. The New York Times reviewer said that he sang Pinkerton with “full- bodied Italianate passion; warm and rich tone; clarion top notes”.
