Marcela is one of the most popular and richest Amateur Wrestler who was born on May 31, 1971 in Guerrero, Mexico. Maria Elena Santamaria Gomez, was born May 31, 1971 in Mexico City. She grew up in Mexico City and lived near Arena Coliseo where Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libres (EMLL) held many Lucha Libre every week. Her mother was a huge fan of the show and took her daughter along from an early age. Marcela initially wanted to be a professional wrestler, but her mother was against it. This caused a rift between mother and daughter, which was eventually repaired. Marcela was 16 when she had her first child. She later had another child. Marcela had her second child at the age of 16 and another daughter later. She became a professional wrestler under the ring name Skadi.

Marcela was one the first women to be given a full-time position with CMLL in 2004. Marcela won the Distrito Federal Women’s Championship just prior to September 20th, 2004. She also won a championship defense against La AMapola that day. Dark Angel and Marcela qualified for the finals in a tournament for vacant CMLL World Women’s Championship. They defeated Hiroka (India Sioux), La Medusa/La Nazi, Linda Star and Princesa Sujei. Marcela beat Dark Angel to win her championship at the CMLL 72nd anniversary show. She defended her title against Hiroka one more time, and La Amapola on several occasions until her reign of terror ended with Hiroka’s defeat on June 9, 2006.

On June 30, 2013, Marcela traveled back to Japan to successfully defend the CMLL World Women’s Championship against Ray at an event held by the Reina Joshi Puroresu promotion. Marcela returned to Japan and Reina on December 12, 2014, when she lost the CMLL World Women’s Championship to Syuri, ending her over two and a half year reign. She regained the title from Syuri back in Mexico on April 10, 2015. On March 11, 2016, Marcela lost the CMLL World Women’s Championship to Dalys la Caribeña. On november 19, 2018 won the CMLL World Women’s Championship.

She began her career with Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre in the 1990s. Marcela defeated La Migala in her first Lucha de Apuestas, which is Spanish for “Bet match”, on September 7, 1991. La Migala had her hair cut after the match, according to lucha libre tradition. In the early 2000s, CMLL didn’t focus on their women’s division. There was often over a month between matches on a CMLL program. Marcela began working on the independent circuit for minor Mexican promotions. Marcela teamed with El Mohicano I, a male wrestler, to defeat La Gata & Black Machine in an intergender Lucha de Apuestas match. This was where both male and female competitors wore bald heads. She was also a participant in the torneo-cibernetico elimination match of International Wrestling Revolution Group’s Intercontinental Women’s Championship. Flor Metalica and Josseline were also present as well as La Diabolica, Lady Metals, Lady Metal, Lady Metals, Lady Metal, La Migala, and Tournament Winner Ayako Hamada.

She is best known for her work with the Mexican professional wrestling organization Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Marcela is one of the most prominent tecnicas in CMLL. She is often teamed up with her daughter, Skadi, a professional wrestler. Santamaria has been with CMLL since the 1990s. She has also wrestled on the Mexican independent circuit and in Japan over the years.

Santamaria started training for professional wrestling in the mid-1980s. This was at a time when female wrestling was illegal in Mexico City and was only promoted by a handful of companies. In December 1985, she made her debut in Actopan (Hidalgo). She borrowed a boxing mask and shoes to make her debut, as she didn’t have any. She decided not to wear a mask after the match. As she started working on the independent circuit, she was simply called “Marcela”. 1986 saw the lifting of the ban on women’s wrestlers. EMLL and other promotion companies in the capital were allowed to hire female wrestlers.

On May 4, 2007, Marcela defeated Princessa Sujei to win the vacant Mexican National Women’s Championship, after first surviving a 14-woman Cibernetico match. She held the title until January 30, 2009, when she lost the title to Princessa Blanca. Marcela is also a former holder of the Distrito Federal Women’s Championship but lost it to La Diabólica at some point in 2009. On April 12, 2009 Marcela defeated Rosa Negra in a Lucha de Apuesta, hair vs. mask match and forced Rosa Negra to unmask after the match and reveal her name per Lucha libre traditions. On October 28, 2011, Marcela succeeded in her thirteenth title shot at La Amapola and defeated her to regain the CMLL World Women’s Championship. She lost the title to Ayumi in Tokyo, Japan, on November 26, 2011. Marcela regained the title from Ayumi on March 9, 2012, in Mexico City. On August 5, Marcela defeated Tiffany in a Lucha de Apuestas, forcing her to have head shaved bald. On December 9, 2012 Marcela defeated Ludark Shaitan to win the Xtreme Mexican Wrestling XMW Women’s Championship.
