Marcel Vanthilt was a Belgian born on 24th August 1957 in Lommel. Marcel graduated from high school and studied at Vrije University Brussel, obtaining a bachelor’s in political science. Because he knew that the VRT had its offices in Brussels, he came to Brussels. He didn’t know there was a school for drama, such as St.-Lukas. He discovered Punk in 1977 while he was at the university.

Vanthilt was a Londoner from 1987 to 1990. He was a VJ on the MTV Europe music station. He presented “Cokes & Vanthilt”, a program he co-produced with Ray Cokes. They reunited again for a special show on Canvas, a Belgian network.

From 1996 to 1998, Vanthilt moved to the United States, in pursuit of his wife. He tried to launch an acting career, but was ultimately unsuccessful. He can be seen as an extra in an episode of Friends (S3E17). After he divorced his wife, he returned to Belgium. He also wrote columns and was reporter for the magazine Panorama. He bundled his columns in a book, called Ha!Merika! and also adapted it to a theatre show.

In 1996 he also recorded the song “I Shoot Dikke Jo” with the Tuvan throat singing ensemble Huun-Huur-Tu.

Marcel Vanthilt became famous with his group “Arbeid Adelt!” The group, “Arbeid Adelt!” was formed in 1981. He sang primarily in Dutch and provided vocals as well as keyboard support. They released 2 EPs, ‘Jonge Helden ‘and ‘Le Chagrin et Quatre vingt’. Minor hits were also recorded with ‘De Dag dat Het Zonlicht ‘ and Lekker Westers’. The group split after their initial success. They reformed a year later and released one single, “Stroom”, before they split again. This was due to discontent with their record label and differing opinions among the members of the band about the future. Vanthilt made the following observation: “They considered us to be a sort of clowns.” They wouldn’t release songs that were representative to what we were doing and instead released “Stroom” en “Witte kom hie”. They were both funny jokes that could be used to make people laugh, but they weren’t good enough for a release two decades after the last album was released.
