He was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Canada, France, Germany. Van der Chijs began his studies in Maastricht in business economics. He then went on to a traineeship with Daimler-Benz. After working in Stuttgart and Indonesia, he eventually moved to Beijing in 1999 as the senior controller for Daimler- Benz’s China operations. He resigned shortly after and started working as an independent consultant, while studying Chinese.
Grace Wang, Van der Chijs’s spouse introduced him to Gary Wang in 2004. Gary Wang was a former classmate at Insead. In 2005, Tudou was established in Shanghai by van der Chijs and Wang. Van der Chijs left more of Tudou’s operation to Gary Wang in 2008, when he assumed the position of chief executive officer. Van der Chijs instead concentrated on his duties as CEO at Spil Games Asia, a Dutch online games company.
In 2013 Van der Chijs left China and moved to Vancouver, where he became a managing partner in venture capital fund CrossPacific Capital. His main activities were in FinTech, with a focus on cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies. In early 2017 Van der Chijs founded the first registered cryptocurrency investment fund in Canada, First Block Capital, and launched the first licensed Bitcoin fund in the world (FBC Bitcoin Trust). He also founded Initial Coin Offering investment bank First Coin Capital that he sold to Mike Novogratz in January 2018 and the largest Bitcoin miner in North America Hut 8 Mining that he took public in March 2018.
