He is currently a TV commentator and teaches racing school. He was a Formula One World Championship Grand Prix participant, making his debut on September 9, 1979. He earned 17 championship points.

Surer started his career as a TV commentator for Sky Sport (Germany), covering all Formula 1 events. Following Schulz’s departure prior to the 2013 season he was reunited with Sascha Roos as a commentator.

In 2016, in an academic paper that reported a mathematical modeling study that assessed the relative influence of driver and machine, Surer was ranked the 17th best Formula One driver of all time.

Surer continued to rally, but a serious crash in his Ford RS200 at the 1986 ADAC Hessen-Rallye severely injured him. His friend and co-driver Michel Wyder was also killed. BMW retained him as a driver and coach, and later as director of motorsport activities. Surer won the German Super Touring Car Championship in 1994 and 1995 with Johnny Cecotto, Jo Winkelhock and Jo Winkelhock.

Surer began his karting career in 1972. He moved to Germany in 1974 to compete in the Formula Vee Championship. He switched to European Formula 3 in 1976, where he was noticed and hired by Jochen Neerpasch as a BMW Junior Team member along with Eddie Cheever & Manfred Winkelhock. He finished second in 1978’s Formula 2 Championship and won the series in a March-BMW the next year.

Surer made his debut in Formula 1 at the end 1979. He was not a great driver. In qualifying for the South African Grand Prix, he broke both his legs. He was racing in an ATS at Kyalami 1980 and again in South Africa in 1981 for Ensign. Ensign’s best result was achieved when he took 4th at the 1981 Brazilian Grand Prix. He also set the fastest lap. After driving for Theodore, he returned to Arrows and remained there for a few seasons until BMW’s support allowed him to take up a seat at Brabham in 1985. Surer drove for Arrows again in 1986, but he retired from Formula One at the halfway point of the season.

Surer has been married twice to former Playboy models, first to Playmate Jolanda Egger, and then to Christina Surer between 1997 and 2000. On 3 December 2011 he married his longtime partner Silvia Renée Arias.
